There’s a drink out there called the Southside and there are several different versions of the recipe. But basically it’s a Gin Mojito, and sometimes it’s shaken and served up in a martini glass and some other times it’s blended with triple sec.
I don’t make it any of those ways.
My mom taught me a really yummy and easy way to make them and they’ve sort-of become our Summer cocktail over the past several years. We still call them Southsides, even though I’m pretty sure we’re completely wrong about that. Here’s the basic recipe-
*Southsides According to the Wade Girls
Add to the pitcher of your blender…
–1 6 oz can of frozen limeade
–6 oz of white rum (pour it into the empty limeade can to measure, and to also ensure that you get all the juice out of the can)
–a handful of fresh mint
–ice cubes filled to the top of the blender
Puree until no ice cubes are left and it looks like a glittery-green slushy.
It’s delicious on its own but of course I had to go and change it…
My husband and I now make Blueberry Southsides, Watermelon Southsides, Strawberry Southsides, Coconut Southsides, Mango Southsides… you get the picture. (All you’re doing is adding a handful of whatever fruit you want to the basic mix before you blend) I feel a little better about drinking any of these because of the added fiber content…
But now I have made yet another version that shouldn’t come as too much of a shock because of my recent obsession with cucumber juice. So far this Spring I’ve made Cucumber Martinis and Cucumber Margaritas, and now I just came up with the Cucumber Southside. It’s super delicious and oh so refreshing. It has just the right amount of sweetness and is still relatively easy to prepare if you do what I’ve been doing lately with my cucumber juice. I make a huge batch of it with my electric juicer and freeze it in ice cube trays. That way I have it on hand for whatever cucumber drink I decide to make that day. (I also do this with any citrus that is about to go bad… I have a lot of juice cubes in my freezer right now) So here you go-
*Cucumber Southsides
–1 12oz can of limeade
–12 oz of fresh cucumber juice
–6 oz of white rum
–big handful of fresh mint leaves
–ice cubes filled to the top of the blender
Puree it all until perfection is achieved.
My husband and I find that these drinks taste the best after a long day of working in the hot sun. They hit the spot like you wouldn’t believe. Enjoy!
This is the blueberry version before blending..so pretty! |

The Cucumber Southsides sound divine! You are really inspired (and inspiring) this week.
Well that's incredibly sweet-Thank you!
Very inventive! I may try strawberry first, however. It's all a question of what's in season……
Strawberry is a yummy version, and that's really what we do with these drinks- add whatever fruit we have on hand.
